Authorities in Azerbaijan have officially protested this week’s visit by a high-level Uruguayan delegation to Nagorno-Karabakh, which it considers to be its breakaway region.

Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev stated on Wednesday that “these kinds of visits undermine the peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and might lead to very bitter consequences for Armenia.”

A delegation headed by Jorge Orrico, the chairman of Uruguay’s House of Representatives, visited Nagorno-Karabakh and held talks with the local leadership on November 13.

Before the visit a number of Uruguayan officials have dropped hints that the government of the Latin American state was considering recognizing the right of Karabakh Armenians to self-determination.
