Catch-22: Meliq village needs jobs, but fears impact of expanded mining

Residents of Meliq village (Aragatsotn province, 80 km from Yerevan), as well as a number of environmental organizations are concerned over the construction by Mego-Gold LLC of a third tailings dam of Tukhmanuk gold ore-processing plant next to the village.

Mego-Gold [belonging to Global Gold Corporation] has twice held public discussions in the village, and both times they ended with heated arguments. Head of Meliq village Hakob Mkrtchyan told ArmeniaNow that the villagers have found themselves in a tricky situation, when they will lose their jobs if they speak against building the third dam.

“Some 50 people from the village work at the ore-dressing plant. If the third tailings dam is built, the production will grow accordingly, which will create jobs for 50 more. Hence the villagers have to agree, out of their social vulnerability,” says Mkrtchyan.
