A theater actor hospitalized with severe head injuries last week has denied being assaulted by bodyguards of a lawmaker representing the ruling Republican Party of Armenia.

Sergey Grigoryan, from the Yerevan Stanislavsky Theater, told police he had fallen down and hit his head against an armchair on November 29. He said he consulted the doctor only the next day when a medical examination revealed he had suffered a brain concussion.

The family of the actor confirmed this version of events, the police said in a statement today.

Several online media reported on Wednesday that Grigoryan was beaten up by a group of men working for lawmaker Mher Sedrakyan, who holds sway in Yerevan’s Erebuni district. The incident allegedly happened while Grigoryan was queued at a gas station in Erebuni owned by the lawmaker’s extended family.
