The ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) is to declare its presidential candidate in an upcoming congress, the paper has learned.
The issue is reportedly the only topic on the agenda of the two-hour meeting set to take place this Saturday.
Citing its sources, the paper says that the meeting to be run by speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan, will open with the keynote speech of the president, who is also the leader of the ruling political force.
Representatives of the ruling RPA regional bodies (1,942 in number) will then deliver speeches, an organizer of the party, Ruben Tadevosyan, has told the paper.
“Some 1,800 delegates and 60 guests – representatives of parties and NGOs – are invited to the congress,” he was quoted as saying. The invited parties include both parliamentary and extra-parliamentary forces, the paper says, citing Tadevosyan. It notes further that President Serzh Sargsyan was to have left for Brussels on Wednesday to attend the European Parliamentary Party’s (EPP) summit, but the preparation for meeting prevented his departure. Speaking at the Republican’s congress, EPP President Wilfried Martens delivered a welcoming speech, the paper says, citing the RPA sources.”Representatives of the United Russia and Chinese Communist parties, as well as all the ambassadors accredited to Armenia were invited to the RPA congress,” Armen Martirosyan, a spokesperson for the ruling party, was reported as telling the paper.
