The foreign ministers of Poland, Sweden and Bulgaria stressed the importance of the upcoming presidential election in Armenia in the context of the South Caucasus nation’s aspirations to develop closer relations with the European Union.

At a joint press conference (also attended by Armenian FM Edward Nalbandian) in Yerevan on Friday, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, in particular, said: “The elections [in Armenia] must be held at a level that would exclude the slightest possibility of allegations. This is a major condition for continued cooperation in the context of the Eastern Partnership summit due in Vilnius, Lithuania, next November.”

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov, for his part, said that the EU would closely watch the course of the presidential election in Armenia in order to see if “considerable progress” is made.
