Full festive tables good, says consumer NGO chief

Having full tables for the New Year is a very positive phenomenon, says Armen Poghosyan, the president of the Consumers’ Union NGO.
He warns against any attempts to underestimate those parents who borrow money to celebrate the holidays.
“Full tables in families are linked to a very positive and good feature of our nation. All parents wish to lay a proper table in their houses for the children. And that’s very commendable,” he told Tert.am.
Asked whether it is worth to celebrate the New Year at the cost of debts, Poghosyan said it is another side of the problem.
“It is very regrettable, of course, that people spend all their savings for that day. I know, for example, a couple of people who have mad loans. Nonetheless, it is commendable,” he claimed.
While only 10%-12% of Armenia’s population can afford such a luxury in general, others have the right to do so at least once a year, Pohgosyan added.
“It is perhaps only 10%-12% of Armenia’s population that can afford to celebrate the New Year they way they wish. They do not absolutely care about the price of a palace or car; but we have another 80% who are in tight circumstances, and nevertheless celebrate the New Year. Isn’t that commendable, be it though forced?” he said.
