Galust Sahakyan of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia has promised his political force’s best efforts to ensure transparent presidential elections in February.
At a news conference on Wednesday, he said the party is concerned of not only the outcome but also the effectiveness of the process.
“Eighty percent of the role-players on Armenia’s political arena are taking part in the elections, so we have challengers. We have to work successfully to ensure the competitiveness,” he said.
Sahakyan, who heads the Republican faction in the National Assembly, said they are going to reduce the number of political debates and press conferences to a minimum to avoid a public criticism that the party is showing itself off.
“We have no bias in making frequent public appearances or attending debates,” he said.
Asked what measures are necessary to head to the elections without the oligarchic system, Sahakyan answered, “The oligarchic system results from political conditions. It’s more often manifested in landlocked countries like Armenia,” he said, stressing the importance of eliminating monopolies as a measure to combat oligarchy.
