Interim committee on March 1 events to be formed in Armenia=?UTF-8?B?4oCZ?=s NA

The Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs, National Assembly (NA) of Armenia, reached a compromise agreement to approve the draft proposal to set up an interim commission to investigate the tragic events in Armenia’s capital, on March 1, 2008. Gagik Jhangiryan, an MP from the opposition bloc Armenian National Congress (ANC), is co-author of the draft. The draft will be put on the agenda of the Armenian NA’s four-day session. The compromise is that Committee Chairman David Harutyunyan requested that the committee only deal with legal assessment of the events rather than political and legal assessment.“Otherwise, the committee will share the fate of the fact-finding group. That is, the public does not expect a political debate on the March 1 events. Rather, the public expects answers to concrete questions. This is the reason why I think that the committee must not turn into a platform for political debates,” Mr Harutyunyan told Tert.am.At the committee’s mee ting, Naira Zohrabyan, Secretary of the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) parliamentary group, voiced the opinion that the March 1 committee should make both legal and political assessments of the tragic events.“Yes, we must find out the circumstances of ten deaths, identify the ones that ordered and organized that shooting. Political riffraff do not give up their attempts to link Prosperous Armenia with March 1. That is why all the answers must be given,” Mrs Zohrabyan told Tert.am.
