Armenian Opposition Leader Ends Hunger Strike
Opposition leader Raffi Hovannisian has ended a 21-day hunger strike to attend an Easter Service at the Holy Echmiadzin Cathedral where the top Armenian leadership, including President Serzh Sarkisian, were also present on Sunday.
The two men did not meet eventually despite attending the same liturgy.
Before heading for Echmiadzin Hovannisian told RFE/RL’s Armenian Service (Azatutyun.am) that he was going there together with his family as an ordinary Christian and follower of the Armenian Apostolic Church and did not pursue political goals or seek a meeting with Sarkisian at the mass.
To the question afterwards whether such a meeting was still possible, Hovannisian answered affirmatively. But he ruled out going to the presidential office as Sarkisian insisted through his spokesperson earlier this week.
