Parliament fails to agree on statement regarding post-election situation

The ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) appears to have abandoned the idea of passing a statement supported by all factions through the National Assembly to call for dialogue in the continuing post-election standoff.

The four minority factions represented by the Prosperous Armenia Party, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, the Armenian National Congress and Heritage, effectively refused to support the statement that they said was of a declarative nature and did not consider their proposals for a genuine solution to the crisis.

The RPA appeared to have regarded the move as an additional safeguard that the opposition led by Raffi Hovannisian, who is continuing his hunger strike as part of a broader campaign disputing President Serzh Sarkisian’s official reelection, would choose the way of dialogue and refrain from ‘unconstitutional’ means of struggle in the continuing standoff.
