Weekend update: Political parties on Yerevan=?UTF-8?B?4oCZ?=s Council of Elders elections; new Armenian offers for UNESCO World Heritage list

Armen Rustamyan, a Dashnaktsutyun party candidate in Yerevan’s Council of Elders elections, said that it was necessary to form an alliance of opposition forces for the upcoming elections, which should have been led by the leader of the oppositional Heritage party Raffi Hovannisian, who however did not agree to head it.

“We all would have joined the alliance to participate in the elections. If the opposition representative becomes Yerevan’s mayor it will have a positive impact not only on public movement, but on the whole country. We have tried to form such alliance, but there was the problem of leadership. If Hovanissian had agreed to lead the opposition alliance, it would be much easier to reach an agreement, but he did not do so as he considered that this will cast a shadow on his victory in the presidential election,” said Rustamyan at a April 13 press conference.
