Confounding Copyright Concerns: Dealers say new law on piracy is impractical

Armenia has stepped up its anti-pirating measures of DVDs, software, etc., as amendments to the law on compulsory labeling went into effect Thursday.

Armen Azizyan, heading the economy ministry’s Intellectual Property Agency, believes it is an efficient method of fighting illegal activities.

Companies are unable to sell their CDs and DVDs because they need the Agency’s permission, based on which the tax service provides excise labels. Merchants and distributors, however, say the new law is damaging and impractical.

“If we follow Azizyan’s logic, we have to bring a contract from Michael Jackson’s producer to be able to sell or produce his CDs? I have Shushan Petrosyan’s permission to release a CD with her songs, while Azizyan tells us to bring Shushan Petrosyan’s producer’s permission,” says director of CD and DVD producing Reco Records company David Khamoyan.
