Market Trend: Largest bazaar vendors say business too low, rent too high

Some 2,000 vendors of Yerevan’s biggest market-fair “Malatia” are demanding to lower the rent, because with the decreased commodity volumes they cannot afford paying the 120,000-160,000 drams ($300-$400) for space.

Vendor Nara Hakobyan, who has worked at the market for fifteen years, says that if the trade isn’t good, how can they pay the rent? And if the state does not heed to the vendors they will lose their jobs.

“The payment has to be lowered, so that we can offer discounts to our customers, and earn at least 500 drams ($1.20) per item in reselling, due to the decreased rent. Today everybody seems to be engaged in trade, new shops open in the city every day, there are less people left, hence not many to sell to…” Hakobyan told ArmeniaNow.
